A biorhythm (from Greek βίος – bios, “life” and ῥυθμός – rhuthmos, “any regular recurring motion, rhythm”) is a system for predicting various aspects of a person’s life through simple mathematical cycles. The theory was originally developed by Wilhelm Fliess (a close friend and scientific collaborator of Sigmund Freud) in the late 19th century and later popularized in the late 1970s.

Biorhythms are closely connected to people’s behaviour and emotions, as well as their age. Younger people have faster biorhythms than older people. The faster someone's biorhythm is, the more likely they are to commit crime, have sex, or engage in risky behaviours. When people are stressed out, their biorhythms become faster than when they are calm.

Various factors affect biorhythms, but one unexpected one is minor fluctuations in gravity, known as GE rates. It has been known for many years that crime, murders, suicides, and so on peak when there is a full moon and reach a low point when there is a new moon. This is due to the Moon’s gravitational cycle and its effects on the human body.

Similarly, locations with high GE rates, such as Shibuya, can cause biorhythms to increase in people. This is why Shibuya attracts so many young people, because young people have faster biorhythms and they are naturally attracted to live in places with high GE rates. It is also why the New Generation Madness takes place in Shibuya, rather than a city with low GE rates.

Biorhythms are directly correlated with how much dopamine is secreted by the limbic system. The more dopamine released by the limbic system, the faster the biorhythm, and vice versa.

Most illegal drugs directly cause a short-term increase in dopamine secreted by the limbic system, known as a “high”, and then after awhile this wears off and dopamine levels become lower than normal, known as a “low”, and drug addiction occurs when people need to take drugs just to maintain a normal level of dopamine. The addiction cycle with drugs is another type of biorhythm, with addicts requiring a new fix on a regular basis, and the elevated levels of dopamine they have when they are high cause them to engage in risky behaviors and commit more crime.

Another method for increasing biorhythms is through torture, a method N.O.Z.O.M.I. uses on children at facilities like the Ark Heart Medical Group to increase their biorhythms as part of experiments to awaken children who might be Gigalomaniacs.

Biorhythms are especially important to Gigalomaniacs, with higher biorhythms awakening their powers to manifest DI-Swords and engage in realbooting. Gigalomaniacs are especially strongly attracted to areas with high GE rates and have faster biorhythms than anyone else, which are part of what give them powers other humans are unable to do.
