Interview with the Creators[]

162 — Interview of Chiyomaru Shikura[]

Staff Interview I[]

This interview was conducted over several sessions from April to September of 2010, then compiled;
translated by ArkifixOff.
This section will only present the Q&A concerning ChäoS;HEAd.
For the Q&A concerning Steins;Gate, see this page on the Steins;Gate Wiki.

The top runner for the staff interview is, of course, Mr. Chiyomaru Shikura, the most important person in the Science Adventure Series. In his unique and smart way of speaking, he will talk to us about not only production secrets, but also his stance on work and his view of life.

Q1——Could you tell us once again about the story of the establishment of the Science Adventure (hereafter “SciADV”) Series, which started with “CHAOS;HEAD (hereafter “CHAOS”) then continued with “STEINS;GATE (hereafter “SG”)?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)[2]

Q2——The SciADV Series is characterized by systems such as “triggers” that are not optional. What about the usage of the Delusion Trigger in “CHAOS” and the Phone Trigger in “SG”?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

...

Q4——Now, let me ask you about the specific circumstances of the production of “CHAOS”. What was the motive for bringing the PC version of the project to Nitroplus?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

Q5——Then, with “CHAOS;HEAD NOAH” (hereafter “NOAH”), the platform changed to the Xbox 360.

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

Q6——Speaking of naming, how did you decide on the names for the heroines of “CHAOS”?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

Q7——In addition to their names, can you tell us some anecdotes about the heroines?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

Q8——In the case of “NOAH”, was the classification of “Z” in terms of CERO ever discussed?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)[3][4][5]

Q9——How did you come up with the idea for a PSP version of “CHAOS;HEAD NOAH”?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

...

Q12——What steps do you take when creating a draft or plan?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)[6]

Q13——How do you write a draft plot?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

...

Q16——In terms of structure, “SG” differs from “CHAOS” in having a single unified point of view.

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

...

Q20——What do you think about the rise in fan activities and doujinshi?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

Q21——What do you think of the development of “CHAOS” and “SG” hereafter?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)

...

Q23——Finally, I would like to ask you about the common theme of both works. In “CHAOS”, Takumi's loneliness, which causes him to not experience life in relation to reality, and his salvation through Rimi's presence thereafter, and in “SG”, Okabe's loneliness over the world lines and his bond with the lab mems who save him, are common points. In “CHAOS;HEAD Love Chuchu!”, there is also something expressed in the theme song “Let’s Synchro!”. In other words, I feel that the works that you are involved with often have the theme of people overcoming loneliness and understanding each other......?

Shikura: (to be translated, japanese text below in commentary when editing)[7]

  2. [Mutsumi Sasaki] (name)
In addition to “CHAOS;HEAD”, he is a popular illustrator who has worked on games such as “Memories Off” and “Myself;Yourself”. He has also illustrated for “Futakoi”, “HAPPY★LESSON” and other media mix contents from “Dengeki G's magazine”. His books include “Mutsumi Sasaki ART WORKS 1998-2005” (Media Works) and “est — Mutsumi Sasaki's self-selected art collection” (Media Factory).
  3. [Angelus] (game)
Its formal name is “Angelus - The Devil's Gospel”. An ADV released by Enix in 1988 for the PC-88. The music is by Kōichi Sugiyama of the “Dragon Quest” series, Shou Aikawa, whose notable works include “Fullmetal Alchemist” (the old animated version), collaborated on the script, and the character design is by Tsukasa Dokite of “Dirty Pair”. The game features cinematic effects, and a strange disease that causes the skin to turn green and lead to death appears in the play. At right is the corresponding cut in “CHAOS” (picture of the Vampbuyer case to add).
  4. [Seven] (movie)
A psycho-suspense movie released in 1995. Directed by David Fincher. Two detectives investigate a bizarre murder case based on the seven deadly sins of Christianity: gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, arrogance, jealousy, and wrath. This hit movie stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as the detectives and Kevin Spacey as the killer, John Doe, and is impressive for its uniquely dark tone and unrelieved ending.
  5. [Prison Break] (overseas drama)
A popular overseas drama series along with “24 -TWENTY FOUR-” and “LOST”. It began airing in 2005 in the U.S., and it became a hot topic when rentals began in 2006 in Japan. The story line falls into the category of so-called “prison/prison escape” series such as “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Great Escape”, which Mr. Shikura likes, and its thrilling development and emotional drama are appealing. Due to the popularity of the series, a total of four series have been produced up to the final movie, “Final Break”.
  6. [The ideal game is one that has the depth and dimensions of a game inside, so that if you want to touch something, you can touch it.] (other)
When you're playing to a game, the playful elements in small parts of it can lead to a search for “easter eggs” and “funny dialogues”, which paradoxically have the effect of making the game more challenging and more enjoyable to play. The TIPS system common to both “CHAOS” and “SG”, as a source of information in the game that is still freely selectable by the user, as well as its small complementary and optional nature, is also a reflection of this awareness. 7. [Development of the Royal Afilia Magic Academy] (other)
Theme cafes produced by Shikura. In addition to the “Royal Afilia Magic Academy: Cafeteria” in Ikebukuro and the “Astronomical Observation Diner Afilia Stars” in Roppongi, there are also cafes in Ueno (Cherie's), Nagoya (Dining), and Osaka (Kitchen's). In the past, collaborative events “ChäoS;HEAd Encounter” and “STEINS;GATE Encounter” were held, featuring cast members dressed as characters from both works and collaborative menus.
