A Gravitational Error Rate (commonly called a GE rate for short) is a measurement of fluctuations in the Earth’s gravity, such as from the pull of the moon or underground mineral deposits, at a given location. In some locations, the GE rate is unexpectedly high. GE rates have been connected with behavior, such as the New Gen murders. GE rates are usually referred to in the plural, to talk about the Gravitational Error Rates at multiple locations, rather than just a single location.

GE rates are not just connected with gravity but also magnetism; they alter the behavior of pendulums, making them go in ellipses instead of circles, and can make magnetic compasses go haywire, which has been noted to happen in Aokigahara Forest, a very dense forest near Mount Fuji located atop volcanic rock where compasses do not function, and the most popular location in the entire world for people to commit suicide.

Shibuya has some of the highest GE rates in the world, especially at certain locations in Shibuya, and the New Gen murders tend to happen at the locations with the highest GE rates. Shibuya is located on top of large magnetite deposits, and this is thought to be the reason by some experts.

Detective Ban was able to deduce most of this using his unorthodox techniques of combining real-world evidence and logic with an openness to any sort of paranormal explanation he hears of. In this case, he combined together what he had heard on a broadcast of “psychic investigator” Yuri Brightman’s show when Yuri had interviewed Professor Outa Hissashi of at Totou University with real-world evidence. Professor Outa Hissashi, the leading expert on GE rates, ended up being the one killed at the Cruc-affixion murder, the one Ban was assigned to investigate by the police department, and the scene of his murder was one of the locations with the highest GE rates.

Spikes in GE rates

There are three times that GE rates spike:

• The GE rate rises every weekend (also the same time that new Gero Froggies made by the FaithWorks Ltd., a subsidiary of N.O.Z.O.M.I., go on sale).
• There are tremendous increases in GE rates during earthquakes. Three earthquakes of increasing magnitude occur in Shibuya cause this: the First Melt, Second Melt, and Third Melt.
• And finally, GE rates spike wherever there is an election, which appears to have helped The Meiwa Party gain more seats in the Diet (Japan’s Parliament/Congress).

The rise on the weekends is not very high, and always consistent. The rise during the parliament elections is not extreme, but noteworthy. Most alarming of all is the increase of GE rates during earthquakes.

Effects

Higher GE rates lead to faster biorhythms, by increasing secretion of dopamine by the limbic system. This increases crime, attracts young people, makes people more likely to have sex and engage in risky behaviors, and helps Gigalomaniacs awaken their powers of finding their DI-Swords and realbooting. The abnormally high GE rates of the dense Aokigahara Forest near Mount Fuji, where compasses do not function at all, are likely the reason it is the most popular spot for people to commit suicide in the entire world.

Interestingly, magnetite, the mineral located under Shibuya in large deposits which gives it such high GE rates, is also naturally found in the human brain. Especially high concentrations of magnetite are found in the hippocampus, the region where Kurisu Makise of Steins;Gate determines memories are stored. This relates to how Visual Rebuilding technology works, with the electromagnetic waves interacting with the magnetite in the human brain, causing neurons to fire electrochemical impulses via electromagnetic induction. Along with storing memories, the hippocampus is also part of the limbic system, responsible for how much of the neurotransmitter dopamine is secreted throughout the body, giving it control over biorhythms.

During the three major earthquakes in Shibuya, there was white light that appeared in the sky, i.e. electromagnetic waves, and this was actually the cause of the earthquakes, not an effect. These electromagnetic waves affected the magnetite in people’s brains, causing their limbic systems to secrete more dopamine, and thus increasing their biorhythms. This helped the Gigalomaniacs awaken their powers.
