Issei Hatano (波多野 一成, Hatano Issei) is a former scientist and the father of Sena Aoi, and a homeless man who carries around a sign warning about the end of the world.
Appearance[]
Issei is a middle-aged man with unkempt dark hair. He wears a dirty old green coat and a white shirt with dark pants. He can be frequently seen around Shibuya with signs warning about the coming disaster. These signs all contain text in red and black on a white background, however the exact text changes with each his appearance.
While working for N.O.Z.O.M.I., he was wearing a white lab coat and a blue necktie.
Personality[]
Issei feels heavy guilt from his past actions that led to the cruel deaths of his wife and younger daughter, as well as the discovery of Ir2 equation. Because of this, he is not afraid when Sena Aoi, his older daughter, and Kozue Orihara want to kill him, as he feels death would help him redeem himself. However, he is not purely focused on dying and tries to provide help to his daughter and other Gigalomaniacs whenever possible, for example, giving advice to Kozue on using her DI-sword.
Background[]
Issei Hatano worked for N.O.Z.O.M.I. as a scientist and was the person who discovered the elementary school paper by the original Takumi Nishijou about the Ir2 equation. He was also a follower of the Cosmic Church of the Divine Light.
During the experiment of Noah II on his daughter and wife, Hatano tried to stop the experiment when his daughter died. However, N.O.Z.O.M.I. would not let them stop, and removed him from the experiment. They allowed him to witness the moment when they awoke his wife from the Noah II induced stupor and the chaos that ensued after. Sena saw this moment too, but got the mistaken impression Hatano had approved of these unethical experiments on his own wife and daughter, something N.O.Z.O.M.I. did to turn Sena against her father to prevent them from working together.
Hatano was thrown out of N.O.Z.O.M.I. and the Cosmic Church of the Divine Light, and spent his time homeless on the streets, preaching about the end of the world. His daughter Sena blamed him for everything that happened and went around Shibuya with her DI-sword looking for him, wanting to kill him. Sena changed her last name from Hatano to her mother’s maiden name Aoi because she hated him so much.

- ↑ Deduced: if Issei Hatano is born on November 7, is 39 and celebrates his 40th birthday during ChäoS;HEAd, which takes place in 2008, then he would be born in 1968. However, since the events of ChäoS;HEAd seem to take place in 2009 for the rest of the Science Adventure Series, it is possible that his birth year was retconned to be a year later.
