Kozue Orihara (折原 梢, Orihara Kozue), calling herself “Kozupii”, is a girl who transferred in Suimei Academy’s second year class C, the same as Takumi Nishijou. Kozue frequently uses her Gigalomaniac abilities to talk to people with “the voice of her heart.” She cannot speak verbally due to extreme shyness.

Appearance

Kozue is short, younger-looking, and relatively flat-chested, looking like a middle school girl instead of a high school student. She wears her long, yellowish orange hair topped by an ahoge in two curly pigtails and wears the Suimei Academy school uniform with white over-the-knee stockings.

Her casual clothing consists of a pink-white lolita dress outlined by a white fringe and with short puffy pink sleeves.

Personality

Kozue’s most defining trait is her inability to talk, which she makes up for with her telepathic abilities. Outside of school, she is usually seen with Sena Aoi after she moves to Shibuya. Kozue is much friendlier than Sena, and offers Takumi a chance to join up with her and Sena to try to defeat N.O.Z.O.M.I..

At school, Kozue always seems quiet and on the verge of tears, but when she is talking in her head to Takumi or Sena, she sounds bright and chipper, and Takumi often remarks that she sounds like an anime character. Her childish, cutesy manner of telepathic “speech” sounds somewhat similar to Faris NyanNyan from Steins;Gate except without sounding like a cat. She also attaches the suffix “-shan” to people's names (likely a hybrid of “-chan” and “-san”). In reality, she wants to live a normal life as a high school girl and make friends, but since the acquirement of her DI-Sword she has begun thinking that such a life would be unnecessary for her as her sword would protect her.

Despite her cheeriness, though, she often telepathically “says” very disturbing things. She said that the reason she had to get her hands on a DI-Sword was “So the bad men would go slashy-slashy boom boom!”. If someone threatens her or anyone she knows she says, in a chipper voice, “I'll kill you!”. Although she seems upbeat, she is extremely disturbed and in deep pain, with a desire to kill people.

Background

Kozue has had the ability to sense the “voices of people’s hearts” since she was very young, as a Gigalomaniac with psychic mind-reading and abilities that are on all the time that she can never turn off, although her telepathic ability to communicate with other people is something she can control. She managed to hide the power from everyone and live normally, though people often thought she had a scarily strong intuition.

In her first year of high school, she started having a phobia about mirrors, and began to think that everyone around her was thinking “Who are you?” (“お前はだれ？”, “Omae wa dare?”) and laughing. She started skipping school, but no matter where she went, the voices followed in. One day, she looked into a mirror and said “Who are you?” and never spoke a word and could not look at herself in a mirror since then. She began hearing “Who are you?” more and more, whether it was from others or her own delusions. One day in the second year of high school, she saw some of her classmates holding mirrors and laughing. After one of them happened to say “Who are you?,” Kozue acquired her DI-sword during a panic attack, and cut the classmates' hands off. Because the murder weapon could not be found, Kozue was not accused of murder, but her family still chose to move to Tokyo to avoid the hostile atmosphere of her hometown. Her phobia and the continuous psychological assault on her stemmed from an attack by N.O.Z.O.M.I. to awaken her.

For a while, she did not attend her new school as a consequence of being afraid of being misunderstood, although her parents did not reprimand her for it. On one of her morning strolls through Shibuya, she met Issei Hatano, who gave her advice on using her DI-sword and told her that the strongest Gigalomaniac is the boy who had birthed “Whose eyes are those eyes?.” Later, she met Sena Aoi and the two became friends.

• Kozue likes meat and pastel color clothes and accessories, but dislikes vegetables, mirrors and talking with people.

• During her spare time, Kozue likes collecting band-aids.
• Kozue likes making small accessories out of colourful beads (calling them “Clickity-Clackities”) and always gifts one to a new friend. She has only given one to Sena Aoi thus far, but in her route she gives one to Takumi Nishijou as well. She is not very skillful at making them though, so her mother makes them for her.
• In the Japanese version, Kozue regularly adds the degenerated declarative copula "nora” (のら) to the end of her sentences as part of her cutesy speech. In some sentences of the official English translation of ChäoS;HEAd NoAH, the romanization of this word has been kept.

Etymology

• The name Kozue means “treetop, tip of a branch, twig” (梢, kozue).
• Kozue's surname Orihara means “fold, break, fracture, bend, yield, submit” (折, ori) and “meadow, original, primitive, field, plain, prairie, tundra, wilderness” (原, hara).
