I'm just a lazy-ass... delusionary... otaku freak... A useless loser who can't do anything on his own!
— Takumi Nishijou, Chapter 9

Takumi Nishijou (西條 拓巳, Nishijō Takumi) is the brother of Nanami Nishijou and a borderline hikikomori who spends most of his time shut away at his home, a cargo container, which he calls his “base”. He is a second-year Suimei Academy student and experiences many delusions, his most common positive delusion being one of Seira Orgel, his favorite anime character from the TV show Blood Tune: THE ANIMATION.

Appearance[]

Takumi has spiky, dark hair and medium-sized, downward-facing hazel eyes. He has a thin, scrawny build with pale skin, likely the result of spending most of his time indoors. Takumi also tires frequently because of his lack of exercise. He is also somewhat disheveled due to not getting enough sleep or caring much about his personal appearance.

He frequently wears the Suimei Academy uniform, which consists of a yellow blazer with a red rim with the school emblem sewn on the left side, a white shirt with a shirt collar and a loose blue tie underneath the blazer, along with long blue check pants and black shoes. In the anime, his pants and necktie are green instead of blue.

Personality[]

Takumi is very shy and timid. He tries to keep his head down at school so no one will notice him. He even goes as far as to figure out how much school he can miss but still manage to graduate, with a minimum attendance chart which dictates that he only has to go to school two and a half times per week, so he can spend the rest of the time gaming and watching anime. Although he hardly has any friends in the real world, he has over 100 friends on the social networking service FrePara, where he is known as Lightning-Fast Neidhardt.

As a very timid and nervous person, Takumi tries to keep to the margins and to stay out of everyone’s attention. Even if someone speaks to him there is no guarantee he will reply; he usually does not talk unless someone else addresses him first. He always tells himself that he has no interest in 3D girls or people, but he finds himself “taken in” many times, most notably by Yua Kusunoki and Rimi Sakihata. He looks down on other people, people who are involved in the “3D world”, and convinces himself that he does not want to associate with them and would rather associate with 2D waifus like Seira and his collection of figurines. Takumi has an obsession with video games and the anime Blood Tune, has terribly low self-esteem, and self-deprecatingly refers to himself as a “disgusting otaku”. Takumi often suffers from “delusions”, imaginary experiences he has that appear realistic, yet do not actually happen.

He admits that he is a shut-in, although he becomes irritated when people call him a hikikomori because he is not technically one (actual hikikomori do not leave home or attend work or school at all, whereas Takumi goes to school two to three times a week and sometimes goes other places). He also becomes mad whenever people misuse words such as “moe” or “otaku” in an attempt to relate to him. He has a dysfunctional relationship with his sister Nanami Nishijou, who cares for him a lot, but who he finds annoying and always ends up arguing with.

He has many, some with reason, some groundless, delusions about the world around him. While playing Empire Sweeper Online as Neidhardt, he started to cultivate the half-hearted belief that, like in video games, there was someone behind him, controlling him. Because of this he frequently begs for the person to delete his save data and start again with the braver and more worthy character. In the Sena route, this trait makes him immediately believe in the Committee of 300 when they tell him that everyone except the real Committee of 300 and its affiliates could either be considered video game players or NPCs, despite Takumi having no way of proving the validity of this claim. He wants to believe in their claim, since he i.a. wanted to gain the powers they promised to defeat Shogun and to stop being a “weak otaku freak“. Thus, he seems to be somewhat of a credulous person. Most of Takumi’s delusions are either unpleasant or fairly erotic. Seira, however, is his most often occurring (and favorite) delusion. She usually appears whenever Takumi is on his computer, or in his bedroom in general. When Rimi Sakihata held his newest Seira-tan figurine, Takumi stated “Get your hands off my wife!” This may have been out of fear that Rimi might break his beloved figurine, rather than just possessiveness about his property. The Seira-tan figurine that he keeps near his computer most of the time is like an emotional support animal for him, which is why he takes it along to the O-Front incident, for moral support.

Throughout the course of the story, he often depends on other people, as he sees himself as incapable of being a Gigalomaniac. This dependance on others is explored in some of the various character routes of ChäoS;HEAd NoAH. In the end he becomes more sure of himself and starts to defy others' expectations of him, firmly telling them that he will do whatever he pleases and dropping the idea of being heralded as everyone's hero. He finally realises that he wants to save those who he cares about in the little time he has left.

DI-Sword[]

Takumi's DI-Sword is a long sword with no ornate decoration.

Background[]

Takumi was brought into existence a year and a half before the events of the game, being realbooted by Shogun. He is not aware of that, and since he is given some of Shogun's past memories, he thinks he lived the past years as a normal person. Whenever he does have to think about the details of the past few years, they appear very foggy and he cannot remember them clearly, as they are fabricated memories. For Shogun's past, see the plot section of his article.

Takumi spends this year and half without anything notable happening, playing Empire Sweeper Online and attending Suimei Academy, with Daisuke Misumi and Nanami Nishijou being the only two people he talks to in real life.

Main article: ChäoS;HEAd NoAH/Plot

Takumi Nishijou has been living for the past two years inside a shipping container on his father's company's building. He plays video games every day and only goes to school two to three days a week, the minimum amount of days he has to attend. One day, while chatting with his online friend Grimm, another chatter sends him a formula and a horrific picture of a man victim of a grisly murder. Later that day in an alleyway, he encounters the same corpse and a girl in a school uniform belonging to the school he attends standing in front of the corpse, bloodied and with a cross-shaped stake in her hand. She smiles at him and calls him by his name, and Takumi, terrified, runs away in a panic.

In ChäoS;HEAd Love Chu☆Chu![]

After all of these stressful events, Takumi needs a break, so he apparently creates an ideal world for himself that is like a gal game at this point, and that happens in ChäoS;HEAd Love Chu☆Chu!, the direct sequel to ChäoS;HEAd NoAH’s True Ending (the “Blue Sky” ending). At the end of ChäoS;HEAd Love Chu☆Chu!, everything returns to normal and Takumi loses his Gigalomaniac powers, and finally becomes an ordinary human being.

Chaos;Head NoAH - Prologue (No Commentary, CoZ Patch)

  • “A gaze rains down from the sky. Those eyes are always watching me. The stare pierces through the thick, pitch-black rain clouds, and pours down on me like rain. Don't look at me.” — Takumi to himself.[3]
  • “The silence was deafening. It felt as if there were hundreds of insects buzzing around in my head at once. If someone were to tell me this was the afterlife, I couldn't see myself contesting it. That was how... monotonous... simplistic... tranquil... orderly... immaculate... empty... and peaceful the world was.” — Takumi to himself.[4]
  • “SHUT THE FUCK UP! So now you're doing a complete 180 and calling me a hero?! Are you fucking kidding?! I'm an otaku freak! I spend entire days fapping over Seira-tan's sexy figures like a goddamn pervert! I'm not 18, but I play a shit ton of eroge! I moe over sprites and CGs constantly! And in my head, all I ever think about are sexy delusions! I see a woman walking down the street?! I imagine the whore naked! That's who I really am! So?! Still wanna call me a hero?! Because I'm not... I'm just a lazy-ass... delusionary... otaku freak... A useless loser who can't do anything on his own! That's who I am! I won't let other people like you decide who I am! I'll decide what I really am! I'm not your toy! I'm not some circus freak! I have shit to do! I'm not here to do whatever you want me to!” — Takumi to onlookers praising him.[5]

Trivia[]

  • Takumi likes Seira-tan[1] and Cola[1], but dislikes talking with others[1], crowded places[1], 3D girls[1], green peas[1] and shiitake[1].
  • Takumi's birthstone is the pearl.[1]
  • During his spare time, Takumi likes to browse the Internet[1], play games on his PC[1], take care of his figures[1], watch anime[1], experience delusions[1] and draw[1].
  • Takumi has at least three Seira figures lining up on his shelf in his base and owns various anime figures referencing other characters from real-life franchises, such as Arcueid Brunestud, Rin Tohsaka, Saber, and Rider from the Fate franchise.
Some other anime figures seem to somewhat resemble or at least be inspired by other characters, like Ichigo Momomiya from the Tokyo Mew Mew franchise and Yotsuba Koiwai from the Yotsuba&! franchise[6].
One of the figures also references the character Ignis from Jingai Makyō, another visual novel developed by Nitroplus, one of the developers behind the ChäoS;HEAd games.
  • Takumi Nishijou was apparently inspired by Shinji Ikari, the protagonist of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise.

Minor spoiler for Steins;Gate:

Etymology[]

  • The name Takumi means “clear (the land), open, break up (land)” (拓, taku) and “snake, serpent, 9-11AM” (巳, mi).[7]
    • The first kanji in Takumi’s given name, 拓, is pronounced “taku”. The last two syllables of the word “otaku”, which is written as オタク, namely タク, are also pronounced “taku”.
Actually, “otaku” originally was written as お宅 and a sarcastic honorific form of “taku”, written as 宅, meaning “home”, originally referring to someone who never leaves home in an insulting manner. So his name also refers to the fact that he is an otaku.
    • The second kanji in Takumi’s given name, 巳, means “serpent” (specifically referring to the serpent as the sixth sign of the Chinese zodiac), and is pronounced “mi” (although the more common kanji for “serpent” is 蛇, pronounced “hebi”).
This name becomes meaningful later on in the story, in the climax, when Takumi’s DI-Sword takes the form of a serpent.
If you combine together the two kanji in his first name, 拓 and 巳, then the full meaning of his name is “otaku serpent”.
  • Takumi's surname Nishijou means “west, Spain” (西, nishi) and “article, twig, ray of light” (條, jou).[8]
