Yasuji Ban (判 安二, Ban Yasuji) is a detective of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department - Criminal Investigation Division.

Appearance[]

Ban has messy black hair and wears a grey trench coat with a loose black tie around his neck. Despite being 32, he looks older than he is. He carries a fan with him to cool himself off, a habit he does even when the weather is cold.

Personality[]

Ban’s methods of investigation are a little unorthodox, and he also likes to steal the spotlight just at the best part, which annoys his partner Suwa. He doesn’t limit himself to explanations that would agree with the scientific consensus, and is willing to consider pseudoscientific or paranormal explanations for things, as long as they have at least some logic to explain themselves and are consistent with the evidence in a case.

While his superiors dislike his methods and consider him a bit nutty, limiting his career advancement, these unorthodox methods actually let him get closer to the truth of the case than any other detective in the department.

Plot[]

Yasuji Ban is assigned to be a senior detective on the case of the New Gen murders. His partner is the young junior detective Mamoru Suwa, who is very skeptical towards all of Ban’s theories and tries to poke holes in them.

In his first appearance, Ban together with Suwa presents their analysis of footage from a parking lot near the Cruc-affixion crime scene to the investigation group, finding an image of a panicked high school boy (who they eventually identify as Takumi Nishijou) running away from the scene shortly after the murder.

Some time later, they confront Takumi directly on a street near his base. Panicked, Takumi admits to being at the crime scene and talks about the “Demon Girl” he thinks is the culprit. Ban tells him the testimony was valuable, but doesn't really think that due to its absurdity - discreptancies between Takumi's description of the scene and the real crime scene (Takumi saw a huge number of stakes in the corpse, while in reality there were only a few), the bizarre description of a “Demon Girl” from Suimei Academy that is supposedly trying to kill him yet never appeared except for that crime scene, Takumi's generally incoherent speaking style, and other similar factors. Later, Ban and Suwa do show up at school and search through the records, but seem to have found nothing of value, as the results of that investigation are never brought up in the rest of the story.

At one point, Ban and Suwa investigate Takumi's elementary school and find about the accident in which Takumi's teacher died.

Ban gets tasked with tailing Takumi, but pushes that job onto another officer, and instead reinvestigates the crime scenes to discover that all of them had unusually high GE rates, and consults his old friend Katsuko Momose who runs the Freesia detective agency. They discover that Meiwa party is involved and has been manipulating GE rates in their interests.

Momose constantly warns Ban not to get too deeply involved, since the case concerns the ruling political party and an influential corporation, but Ban disregards her warnings. As the result, Ban gets removed from the case, and later even starts getting threatening calls telling him to back off, and feeling that he is always being watched by someone and people nearby are saying his name, such as a child yelling “Bang!” or otakus talking about bandits in a video game. In the end, one of the threatening calls reveals Suwa has been kidnapped and forces Ban to come to AH Tokyo General Hospital. Then, to Ban's surprise, Suwa turns out to be one of the perpetrators of the serial killings, and kills Ban by shooting him on the roof.

  2. Deduced: if Ban is born on September 25 and is 32 during ChäoS;HEAd, which takes place in 2008, then he would be born in 1976. However, since the events of ChäoS;HEAd seem to take place in 2009 for the rest of the Science Adventure Series, it is possible that his birth year was retconned to be a year later.
