Plot

Yua Kusunoki (楠 優愛, Kusunoki Yua) is a third year student at Suimei Academy who is in the same class as Sena Aoi.

In reality, she is the real Yua's younger sister Mia Kusunoki (楠 美愛, Kusunoki Mia) who assumes Yua's identity after her sister's death.

Appearance[]

Mia has long, pale blonde hair with a grey hair clip attached on the left side and dark green eyes. She has a long and slender frame and is always seen dressed neatly.

While attending Suimei, she wears a standard Suimei Academy uniform and the glasses. Notably, she wears a long skirt that goes just past the knees, instead of a short skirt like the other female Gigalomaniacs wear.

Personality[]

Mia was a very selfless girl who always put her big sister before herself. When they were children, a relative had brought them a stuffed bear, and even though Yua had said that they could share it, Mia insisted that she did not like stuffed animals. However, when Yua woke up in the middle of the night, she saw her sister holding the bear, looking happier than she had even seen her. Mia had kept a picture she had drawn of the bear under her pillow, waiting for Yua to tire of the bear so she could have it. She made herself unlikable so that people would like Yua, and even flunked her grades so that Yua could go to the private school Suimei Academy, to which their parents could only afford one tuition.

Mia seemed to be less sociable than Yua and asked her once to go to an anime offline meeting in her place, having regretted agreeing to it. Mia also had a bad attitude, though this might have been a front she had become accustomed to to put Yua in a good light.

She is a shy, quiet, indecisive girl most of the time. Contrasting with her studious nature, she likes anime and manga, particularly Blood Tune. She can also get rather intense sometimes, and when this happens, she has a tendency to repeat the same words or phrases over and over for emphasis.

Before confronting Takumi Nishijou, she seemed to be a very indecisive and shy girl, so much so that she showed a genuine fear of going into a theme store alone, lest she get embarrassed. She is also shown to very caring; she went out of her way to meet Takumi and wish him well on multiple occasions. She and Takumi formed a close relationship very quickly, yet in actuality, it was mostly just a charade in an effort to obtain information from him.

However, her personality flips in entirety when she confronts Takumi about his role in the murders. Cold and calculating, she slowly picks Takumi’s very reality apart as he stands paralyzed with shock, and she seems to care little for the “friendship” they briefly shared, despite Takumi’s feelings. After explaining her true intentions, she appears to pity Takumi for the Dissociative Identity Disorder she diagnoses him as having, and leaves him to his own thoughts as she exits.

DI-Sword[]

Background[]

Mia

Mia Kusunoki as a child.

When the real Yua died in the Group Dive case, her parents cried all night when they heard the news. However, the next morning, when Mia woke up, they were smiling and laughing just like nothing had ever happened, that Mia was actually Yua. They avoided the news and everything that would prove that they had another daughter and that she was dead. When showed them the clothes and shoes that proved two sisters existed, they insisted that they were spares for Yua. Eventually, Mia convinced herself that she is Yua and the one who died was Mia.

Plot[]

In ChäoS;HEAd[]

After her sister's death, "Yua" became obsessed with trying to find her killer. She found and investigated Takumi Nishijou, first following him around like a stalker, and then later befriending him and walking back from school with him and shopping at Animeight together.

She suspected Takumi of being the New Gen serial killer, researching the New Gen crimes on sites like the New Gen Wiki, and also suspected that he had Dissociative Identity Disorder, also known as Multiple Personality Disorder, a theory she came up with by reading about Dissociative Identity Disorder online on websites like We-Key Pedophilia.

She found one of the stakes from the third New Gen killing, the Cruc-affixion, in Takumi’s base. Takumi had brought it back by accident after picking it up while at the crime scene. "Yua" took the stake she found in Takumi’s room as evidence so that she could confront him about it later.

Yua's bag

"Yua"’s bag in a park bench.

Her observations eventually lead her to confront Takumi and betray their “friendship”. She showed him the chat log between him and Shogun, that the timestamps did not match up, and that the messages “Shogun” sent were from Room 37, the room Takumi always used in the Internet café @café ("Yua" used Room 36 next door, taking along her distinctive bag with three attached Gero Froggies). This did not match with Takumi’s memories, since at the time he was allegedly posting as Shogun from Room 37 in @café, he had been doing an ESO marathon as Liselotte, at least according to his recollection.

She said that his other personality was Shogun, who had posted images of the Cruc-affixion before it happened, and because of that, he was the New Gen killer, and also showed him the stake she found in his base that was the same type used in the third New Gen killing. Takumi’s sense of reality was shattered, given this proof that his own memories were wrong, and he was deeply distressed by "Yua"'s manipulation of him.

Later on in the story, she confronted him about it again at @café, then reported him to the police after he ran away, and chased him, but then saw Ayase Kishimoto’s DI-sword and backed off. The cop she reported him to actually already knew Takumi was a person of interest in the New Gen cases, specifically the Cruc-affixion, and was following Takumi around, covering for Detective Yasuji Ban who was the one who had been assigned to tail Takumi.

"Yua" spoke to Yasuji Ban and Katsuko Momose about her investigation of Takumi Nishijou, and her insights in the case, eventually realizing that Takumi was innocent of the murders but very mentally unstable. When she realized she was wrong about Takumi being the New Gen killer, she felt terrible about all the horrible things she said to him that made his mental condition even worse, and eventually she had the chance to apologize to Takumi personally. She was very helpful to their investigation.

Yua awakening

"Yua" awakening as a Gigalomaniac.

When she was in AH Tokyo General Hospital, while following Yasuji Ban when he was trying to save Mamoru Suwa, she saw a delusion that looked like Mia. The delusion told her that she was actually Mia and that she had killed her older sister Yua because her parents had loved her more, and then she had taken her identity. "Yua" said this was not true, but became unsure and she started to believe that she herself that multiple personalities, and that the delusion in front of her was one of them.

“Mia” asked “Yua” to jump off the roof of the hospital to “share her pain”. She nearly did so before coming back to her senses and realizing that as her sister was dead, the “Mia” in front of her was only a delusion. It turned out the delusion had actually been created by a porter, who then tried to push her off the building, but she managed to awaken as a Gigalomaniac, shocking the porter. Ayase appeared thereafter and perforated the porter's backpack, containing the machine responsible for the delusion.

Yua Route[]

Main article: Yua route

In her ChäoS;HEAd NoAH route, she tries to prove to Takumi that she really is Yua and not Mia. However, every piece of evidence actually proves the opposite. For example, it turns out that only Mia had a mole under her left breast, which she now also had.

Eventually, “Yua” realises that she is Mia. She attempts to take her own life over feeling guilty for unwittingly having sent Yua to her death and impersonated her, but only deludes herself of committing suicide, and realises that she in reality did not want to die. Having experienced her pain, Mia decides to live life for Yua's sake.

In ChäoS;HEAd Love Chu☆Chu![]

Following the Third Melt, Takumi falls unconscious and is trapped in a delusional world created by his own powers. In an effort to save him, Yua synchronizes with his delusion so that she may interact with him inside of his own mind. Within this dimension, she encounters Rimi and Takumi at school along with the other members of the Gigalomaniac group. They briefly discuss searching for Seira Orgel, whose existence in this world is akin to a Goddess. After Takumi leaves to return home, Yua secretly meets the other girls in the library. Rimi reveals that if Takumi stays in this world for too long, he will become trapped within his own broken mind. She also reveals that, even if Takumi wakes up, he'll no longer be a Gigalomaniac. Finally, she explains that, since they synchronized with Takumi's delusion, where everything is controlled by his subconscious, they too will be affected slightly.

Depending on the player's actions, Takumi can pursue a relationship with any of the girls, which will alter the game's events.

Yua Ending[]

After meeting with Yua and searching for Seira together, they come across Takumi's favorite bench in the park and sit there to reminisce. Yua apologizes for when she accused Takumi of being the New Gen Killer and talks about her motivations for pursuing him. Takumi says that he really enjoyed the first few days he knew her (before he discovered her duplicity) and wants to try and go back to those days, and Yua enjoyed browsing anime merchandise with him. After a token protest that Takumi is trying to become a normie, which Yua jokingly calls him a traitor for, they decide to give their relationship a try.

After they return to Takumi's house, discuss his fate in the real world and the ownership of Takumi's Seira figure (Takumi gave it to Yua under the premise that he was going to die, and kind of wants it back, which Yua agrees to), Yua suddenly reveals that, after the Third Melt, she regained her memories of being Mia. Both 'Yua' and 'Mia' exist within her and she would like Takumi to decide which should be dominant.

If Takumi chooses Yua, he does so because that is the only one he has ever known. If he chooses Mia, this is because he believes she should be her true self.

Takumi and Yua confront Seira, they affirm their feeling for each other, and after they go back to Takumi's house they both realize that, as Seira's fans, they don't want to kill her. After a night of marathoning anime together, Takumi and Yua reach the conclusion that Takumi needs to accept Seira back into his heart. He does so, they kiss him, and Takumi wakes up on the bench in the park with Yua next to him.

Next spring, Yua has graduated high school and Takumi promises that he will attend the same college when he graduates.

  2. Deduced: if Yua is born on June 21 and is 17 during ChäoS;HEAd, which takes place in 2008, then she would be born in 1991. However, since the events of ChäoS;HEAd seem to take place in 2009 for the rest of the Science Adventure Series, it is possible that her birth year was retconned to be a year later.
